The popularity of online poker has become very prominent lately as it offers interested gamblers to play with just an internet connection without needing them to go out in search of a casino. However, there is one shortcoming for the online poker game sites. Since most players play the game incognito and unlike real casinos, no one can look at each other and observe the body language and other poker tells, it is much more difficult to monitor and prevent cheating technique, particularly collusion among players, from taking place. However, to counter this problem, sites offering online poker game to the patrons often have in place some internal arrangement to check collusion which cannot be used by real casino houses and poker cardrooms. So, the security and technical team of the online poker sites can monitor the hand history of all the participating players and make a note of their pattern of gameplay and use of tactics and detect if collusion is taking place. This is obviously impossible to do in real casino houses where any player can fold his hand and quit the game without others ever knowing what their hand strength was. Another method by which online poker sites regulate players’ integrity is checking the IP address from which they have signed up and/or logged in so that players do not play from the same place using different names or make use of proxy servers to play at the same game table.

Looking back at the history of online poker, it was during the latter part of the 90s that free online poker had originated and it was played at that time in the form of IRC poker. Planet Poker was the first ever online site that employed a virtual cardroom offering real cash games for the interested tech-savvy poker players with the first ever game being dealt and played in January, 1998.
